Valentine’s Day is approaching soon and usually over the years I’ve celebrated Valentine’s Day kinda like this…
However this year I am in a much more festive mood, so I decided to get a head start on my holiday baking and bake some Valentine’s Day sugar cookies for my kids. I like to get my kids working with their hands, this is a great little kitchen fun for you and the family!
WHAT YOU NEED:
- sugar cookie dough recipe
- royal icing
- mini heart shaped cookie cutter
- food gel paste (various colors)
- Gourmet Writer Pen (optional)
STEP 1: Make your sugar cookie dough and chill in fridge over night. You can use a simple sugar cookie recipe like one HERE
STEP 2: Preheat your oven to 350F degrees. Take your dough out the fridge and start to roll on a floured surface. Use a mini heart cookie cutter to start cutting out your cookies.
STEP 3: Place cookies on baking sheet and bake in oven for 6-8 minutes.
STEP 4: Once cookies are done take them out the oven to cool. Start to make your royal icing. Royal Icing is super easy to make. I use powdered sugar, lemon juice and egg whites. People make royal icing various ways. For a quick recipe click HERE
STEP 5 (optional): Color your royal icing. I use Americolor Food Gel (just a drop or two will do)
STEP 6: Glaze your sugar cookies.
STEP 7: Let the royal icing set for a few hours/overnight.
STEP 8: You can leave the cookies as is or decorate your cookies with a Gourmet Writer Pen and write cute messages on the cookies.
Another fun project to do with the kids is something simple. All you need is some paper hearts & a marker. I got these hearts from our local dollar store.
I took a marker and just wrote some positive affirmations for my kids.
And then I just stuck them on their bedroom door so they can wake up and go to sleep with positive thoughts!
